Axolotl's are very intelligent aquatic amphibians that spend their life in the water. They are friendly and can coexist with other tank mates. Living up to an amazing 10-15 years, the Axolotl is a very hardy fresh water aquatic species. Typically, the axolotl will grow to be 7-10 inches, and sometimes up to 12 inches. Native to Mexico, the axolotl possess features typical of salamander larvae; including external gills, and a caudal fin extending from behind the head to the vent. An Axolotl will stay completely aquatic its entire life unless metamorphosis occurs. Metamorphosis is a rare occasion which occurs when water becomes toxic/unbearable for the axolotl to live in, thus resulting in a land-dwelling axolotl. Similar to the tiger salaman...
